But that doesn\u2019t mean we can\u2019t have fun writing better (and queerer!) stories about everyone\u2019s favourite <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Warrior of the Ghrand Jhar<\/span> Shi\u2019ar war criminal with the stalwart support of a writer who\u2019s also Cerise\u2019s Biggest Fan, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HunterFelt\">Hunter Felt<\/a>! We talk might-have-been\u2019s and could-still-be\u2019s and wonder what a good Cerise\/Kurt relationship might look like in a different world where they were allowed to love their difference instead of surrendering to 90s tropes. We also toast the presumably bright future of the character find of 1993\u2014gender-swapped Fang!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I encountered Cerise as a kid, it felt like she merged my masculine and feminine interests. Cerise is a superhero, but she\u2019s also straight out of the Barbie aisle\u2014that forbidden pink aisle I wasn\u2019t allowed shop in because I was a boy.\u201d -Hunter<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Cerise\u2019s first big spotlight and her last big spotlight. They give her an origin story just to write her out of the comic.\u201d -Hunter<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve talked before about the queer potential of Cerise, but this origin story homogenizes her\u2014and her relationship to Kurt.\u201d -Andrew<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI identified with Cerise as a fish-out-of-water character, viewing the world through fresh eyes\u2026 There\u2019s nothing resembling that in this story arc\u2026 I call this story arc \u2018The Character Assassination of Cerise by the Coward Scott Lobdell.\u201d -Hunter<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCerise is assimilated into the \u2018Bad Girl\u2019 archetype of the 90s and there\u2019s no ability to step outside of that and imagine a different way of being female or feminine and strong.\u201d -Anna<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new Excalibur doesn\u2019t want to be different, doesn\u2019t want to be special. It wants to be the fourth best-selling X-Men book in the line.\u201d -Andrew<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the few things we know about Cerise is that she doesn\u2019t know what babies are\u2026\u201d -Mav<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompared to other comics in the 90s, which were a lot grimmer and more violent\u2026 in Excalibur, the fight scenes are secondary to everything else that\u2019s going on.
