From Hannah: In our long line of special episodes, I wanted to look back over the last decade of popular culture. On this show, we’ve talked about some of the big ones in terms of franchises (Marvel pulled off The Avengers! Four times! Disney brought back Star Wars!), but clearly a lot more has happened beyond blockbuster movies. What were the best moments in pop culture of this decade for you? What do you look forward to leaving behind as we enter the 2020s? Is there anything in the coming decade you’re looking forward to (everyone is going to line up to see the Avatar sequels, right??!!? … They aren’t literally going to be a decade late or anything.)?
I know that Black Panther is probably bundled with Marvel movies, but it was so, so important.
Hidden Figures was also an awesome movie. It takes some liberties (Kevin Costner’s character wasn’t as much of a white messiah in real life. Katherine Johnson was a bad ass to the nth degree)
It didn’t really change the cultural landscape or anything but the rise of simulcast for anime was really exciting! I would love to tell my kid self about that 🙂
