There’s a movie coming out next weekend starring comedian Nate Bargatze called The Breadwinner. Curiously, even though we were aware of it, not one of the five co-hosts on the show chose it in the box office game. It just didn’t seem interesting. Recently we’ve gotten a chance to see the trailer and just. Well, none of us really cared for it. Now to be fair, we’re always very loathe to criticize something on this show that we haven’t seen. The film isn’t out yet; maybe it’s great. However, the trailer at least implies that the film is based around tropes that we on the show feel is lazy and uninspired “he’s a man, so he must be shitty at childcare! But now he has the kids how will he do it! Wackiness must ensue!” Now perhaps the movie isn’t that, but there certainly are many films that are. And so, on this week’s episode Maybe, Hannah and Mav are joined by returning guest Stephanie Siler to talk all about this trope in film and deconstruct its usefulness and its failrures. Can you think of counter examples? Do you agree or disagree? Let us know in the comments.
