Every once in a while an adaptation property really surprises us by capturing the cultural zeitgeist far more than its source material would imply that it should. That seems to be the case with the TV show Lanterns. For comic book fans, this always looked interesting — an unlikely buddy cop period drama in the vein of True Detective. It seemed to have obvious if not limited appeal. However, it seems to be gaining traction beyond the limited audience that you’d think would be excited about those characters… if they even know who they are. And yet here we are. It’s gaining critical acclaim and commercial success. Of course, it’s still early, so we’re not going to “review” the show per se, but this week we thought we’d look the character — or really characters and their cultural history. And so Hannah, Wayne and Mav are joined by returning guest Nicole Freim to talk about the history of the Green Lanterns and their cultural appeal.
